This 5-day tour from Marrakech to Chefchaouen packs the Sahara, the imperial city of Fes and the blue town of the Rif into one private road trip. You leave Marrakech over the High Atlas to Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, sleep in the Dades Gorges, then continue past the Todra Gorges and Erfoud to Merzouga, where a camel carries you to a camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and an evening of drums around the fire.
From the desert the road climbs north through the Ziz Valley, the cedar forest of the Middle Atlas and Ifrane to Fes. Day four is for Chefchaouen and its blue lanes, and on day five you return to Fes for a guided walk through the medina of Fes el-Bali — or finish in Tangier if that suits your flight. In Fes on day 5, after a guided walk through the medina. If your flight or ferry leaves from Tangier, the last day can end there instead — tell us when you book.
How much time do you spend in Chefchaouen?
You arrive on the afternoon of day 4, sleep in a riad in the medina and leave after breakfast on day 5. Early morning is the best time for photos, before the day visitors arrive.
What is included in the price?
Private transport with your driver, four nights of accommodation (Dades Gorges, desert camp, Fes and Chefchaouen) with breakfast, dinner in the Dades Gorges and in the desert camp, the camel ride and a local guide in Fes. Lunches, other dinners, entrance fees and tips are paid on the spot.
When is the best time for this route?
March to May and September to November. Summer is very hot in the desert and in Fes, and from December to February the desert nights and the Rif mountains around Chefchaouen are cold.
