The Imlil day trip from Marrakech brings you to the foot of Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa, about an hour and a half from the city. On the way up through Asni you stop at an argan cooperative, then walk from Imlil along mule tracks, walnut trees and terraced fields to the Berber villages of the valley, including Aremd at the foot of Toubkal.

After lunch in a local restaurant you hike to a mountain waterfall — bring good shoes, and a swimsuit between April and November — before the drive back to Marrakech, around 6 pm. The walking is gentle and adapted to your pace; for longer treks see our Imlil hiking guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you book

How much does this day trip cost?

This day trip starts from €49 per person. The final price depends on your date and the size of your group: send us your date and number of people on WhatsApp (+212 661-757505) and we confirm the price quickly. Payment is in cash on the day, in dirhams or euros.

How far is Imlil from Marrakech?

About 65 kilometres, roughly ninety minutes by road. It is the closest the High Atlas gets to the city, which is why it works as a day trip when Ouarzazate or the desert do not.

How hard is the walking in Imlil?

It depends on what you choose. The valley walk between villages on mule tracks is gentle and takes two to three hours. Climbing towards the Toubkal refuge is a serious mountain day and needs an early start and a mountain guide.

Can I climb Mount Toubkal on a day trip?

No. Toubkal is 4,167 metres and needs at least two days with an overnight at the refuge. On a day trip you see it from the valley and walk the lower slopes.

Do I need a guide?

For the village walks a local guide adds a great deal and is inexpensive. For anything above the valley, a qualified mountain guide is required, and we arrange one when you book.

What is the weather like in Imlil?

Noticeably cooler than Marrakech, often by ten degrees, which is exactly why people go in summer. From December to March there is snow on the high ground, and the village itself can be cold and wet.

What should I bring for a day in the Atlas?

Walking shoes with grip, a warm layer even in summer, sun protection, water, and cash for lunch and the mule handler if you use one. Card payment is not available in the village.
